PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -

Northbound Interstate 17 was backed up near Deer Valley Road for two dogs running on the freeway on Wednesday.

The Department of Public Safety was on scene to keep traffic out of the way and round up the pups.

"Yeah, it was pretty intense," said Trooper Kameron Lee with DPS.

The dogs stayed together and were darting in and out of traffic as DPS and Phoenix Fire Department worked to catch them.

Some drivers also got into the act and tried to catch the pups.

One dog was caught on the freeway by DPS but the other dog was not ready to throw in the towel.

"They were running amuck," said one woman.

He kept going right into a nearby mobile home park where the pursuit continues. But after lots of running, chasing, close calls and near misses, the chase came to an end when the little dog was cornered behind one of the homes.

"Everybody helped chase him into the right spot," the woman said.

Both dogs are in the care of Maricopa County Animal Care and Control. They were dirty and one of them had an eye infection.

A cameraman was bitten during the chase so the dogs will be in quarantine for about 10 days.

No word on the dogs' owners or where they came from. If no owner steps forward and the dogs get a clean bill of health, they will be put up for adoption on March 10th, MCACC said.
