(CNN) - Syria has relocated its military aircraft to an air base located next to a Russian base in Syria. That news is according to two U.S. defense officials.

They say the regime has finished relocating the majority of its combat operational fixed wing aircraft to its Bassel al-Assad International Airport. The move puts the Syrian aircraft in close proximity to Russia's adjacent Khmeimim Air Base in Syria.

According to the U.S. officials, the move was likely an effort to protect Syrian airplanes from U.S. airstrikes like the ones carried out against Shayrat airfield.

The April 6 attack was in retaliation for a chemical weapons attack against civilians that the U.S. blamed on Syria’s Assad regime.
